Catcher Joe Gaggero leads off second base during the third inning of Fair Oaks' game against Manhart. Gaggero eventually scored the Oaks' first run of the game in their 3-2 victory.
Fair Oaks 3, Manhart 2 (League: 16-4, Overall: 16-4) - July 6 @ William Land Park - Looking at the box score you might think Fair Oaks was in trouble in their game against Manhart July 6 at William Land Park. Seven pitchers paraded to the mound over the nine inning contest -- but in fact, it was a nice workout for the Oaks who had not played in almost a week. Dustin Aimes, Kyle Richardson, Derek Chase, Brian Janowiak, Mickey Weisser, Charles Smith and Brent Fuhrman all shared in the 3-2 win over Manhart.
The Oaks scored their first runs of the game in the third inning as catcher Joe Gaggero led off with a walk. Aimes followed him to first after getting hit by a pitch, and Post 383 loaded the bases as third baseman Ryan Stevens got a hit down the third base line. Richardson then hit a ball to second that scored Gaggero. The throw went to the shortstop covering second to erase Stevens, but the relay to first was too late to get Richardson. Weisser was next at bat. Unfortunately, Richardson was thrown out stealing to give the Oaks their second out. Weisser walked, as did the next batter -- Smith -- to reload the bases. First baseman Tyler Robertson then walked to force in Aimes from third to make it a 2-0 game.
Manhart scored its first run of the game in the fourth and the game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth when the Oaks got on the board again.
Stevens led off with a hit to right field and then Richardson bunted down the third base line for a hit to put two runners on. With Weisser at the plate, a double steal put runners on second and third and then Weisser's hit to center scored Stevens to make it a 3-1 game.
The contest tightened up in the top of the eighth as Manhart closed the score to 3-2, but the Oaks wriggled out of the inning with a one-run lead. Manhart got runners on second and third with two outs in the ninth, but again the Oaks escaped as Fuhrman, who came in to pitch the ninth, struck out three of the five batters he faced to end the game.
