Fair Oaks 11, West Sacramento 1 (League: 16-4, Overall: 17-4) - July 9 @ Sacramento City College - Fair Oaks opened up its quest for the District 6 title with a big 11-1 win over West Sacramento at Sacramento City College's Union Field on Friday.
The game ended due to the tournament's 10-Run Rule after the Oaks scored their 11th run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh. West Sacramento scored its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth.
After Fair Oaks starter Tyler Robertson put West Sacramento down in order in the top of the first, the Oaks came back to score all the runs they'd need in the bottom of the inning, tallying six times for a 6-0 lead.
Second baseman Chris Rinaudo started things off as he hit a ball to third that was booted. Rinaudo was erased, however, as first baseman Mickey Weisser grounded to the pitcher, with the throw going to short to get Rinaudo. With Weisser on first, left fielder Charles Smith hit a ball to short. West Sacramento shortstop Jason Harris tried to backhand the ball and it tipped off his glove, advancing Weisser to third and Smith to second. Robertson was the next batter -- and in an unusual play West Sacramento pitcher Joshua Zenneveld was called for a balk as he delivered to the plate. The "unusual" part came as Robertson smashed the ball over the left field fence for a home run to score the Oaks' first three runs of the game. West Sacramento fans were screaming "dead ball," but due to Legion playing by Major League rules it was a legit homer.
Tyler Robertson delivers a pitch in the Oaks 11-1 victory over West Sacramento in the District 6 playoffs at Sacramento City College.
The Oaks weren't through -- Third baseman Jason Lomascola walked and then with two out, center fielder Kyle Richardson got a hit to left. Shortstop Derek Chase followed with a hit of his own to left that scored Lomascola, with Richardson advancing to third and Chase to second on the throw home. Catcher Joe Gaggero continued the hit parade, sending another single to left. This one got by Post 440 left fielder Derrick Mar and Richardson and Chase both scored to make it a 6-0 game.
Robertson wriggled out of a bases loaded situation in the West Sacramento second and despite a leadoff walk in the third, got the next three batters out to keep Post 440 scoreless. The Oaks came back in the bottom of the third for another pair of runs to make it an 8-0 lead.
Right fielder Joe Burson led off with a double to left and was moved to third on Richardson's bunt back to the pitcher. Chase followed with a walk and then a Gaggero double down the left field line scored both Burson and Chase to give the Oaks an eight run lead.
West Sacramento finally got on the board in the top of the sixth as Harris drew a one out walk. With second baseman John Lopes at the plate, a pair of wild pitches moved Harris to third. Lopes' ground ball to second brought home Harris to make it an 8-1 game.
The Oaks retaliated in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own as Weisser doubled with two out and then scored on a Smith hit to left for a 9-1 lead.
Robertson put Post 440 down in order in the top of the seventh and the Oaks scored their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the inning.
Kevin Dawidczik, who took the mound for West Sacramento in the fourth, got Burson to fly to center to start the inning, but then Richardson doubled to left to give the Oaks a runner in scoring position. After Chase flew to center for the second out, Gaggero got a hit to right that got by the right fielder and Richardson scored with Gaggero taking second on the play. The game ended as the Oaks' 11th run came home on an infield pop-up by Rinaudo. The ball dropped in amongst a converging infield just to the right and behind the pitcher's mound allowing Gaggero to score and give the Oaks a 10-run lead for the 11-1 win.
