Oaks third baseman Jason Lomascola stands ready to make a play during Post 383's 9-4 win over West Sacramento Saturday night.
Fair Oaks 9, West Sacramento 4 (League: 16-4, Overall: 18-5) - July 10 @ Sacramento City College - Rebounding from their loss to Galt earlier in the day, Fair Oaks Post 383 stayed alive in the District 6 tournament with a 9-4 victory over West Sacramento at Sacramento City College's Union Field.
The Oaks took a 1-0 lead in the first as center fielder Kyle Richardson got a one out hit to right. He was erased as pitcher Mickey Weisser hit a ground ball to short. But then Weisser scored on first baseman Tyler Robertson's double to center field.
West Sacramento came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead, but the Oaks went back in front in the fourth with a pair of runs of their own to make it a 3-2 game.
With one out, third baseman Jason Lomascola hit a ball to third. The throw to first got away, however, and Lomascola was safe. Right fielder Joe Burson's hit to left moved Lomascola to third and then he scored as shortstop Derek Chase hit a ball over the head of the left fielder. Catcher Joe Gaggero followed with a hit to left to load the bases. A groundout by second baseman Chris Rinaudo scored Burson to make it 3-2, but the Oaks were not able to bring in any more runs in the inning.
Post 383 expanded its lead to 6-3 in the sixth as Lomascola led off with a double. Burson bunted down the first base line for a hit and then a double by Chase scored Lomascola to make it 4-2. A fly to left by Gaggero scored Burson for a 5-2 lead and then after an error allowed Rinaudo to reach base, West Sacramento replaced starter Anthony Deus with David Born to try to stop the Post 383 rally.
With Richardson at the plate, the Oaks pulled a double steal with Rinaudo drawing the throw at first and then Chase charging from third to score and make it a 6-2 game. Rinaudo evaded the tag at second to keep the inning alive, but was later picked off with Richardson still at bat to end the inning.
A home run by West Sacramento's Jason Harris in the bottom of the sixth closed the score to 6-3 and an error and a hit led to another Post 440 score to make it 6-4. But the Oaks came back in the seventh with another pair of runs to expand their lead to 8-4.
With one out, Robertson was hit by a pitch. With left fielder Charles Smith at the plate, a wild pitch advanced Robertson to second. Smith flew out for the second out of the inning and then Lomascola was intentionally walked to put two runners on. Burson followed with a hit to right center to score Robertson. Burson stole second with Chase at the plate and then Chase's hit to right scored Lomascola to give the Oaks an 8-4 lead. Burson also tried to score on the play, but was thrown out to end the inning.
Despite giving up several hits and walks, Weisser held West Sacramento scoreless the rest of the way. Fair Oaks scored its final run of the game in the ninth as Weisser led off with a walk and moved to second on a Robertson ground ball on the infield. Smith followed with a hit to left to score Weisser to tally the Oaks' final run in the 9-4 victory.
