Yolo 4, Fair Oaks 1 (League: 16-4, Overall: 20-6) - July 15 @ Renfree Field, Sacramento - An early pitcher's duel turned ugly as a costly fifth inning error allowed in two runs en route to a 4-1 victory by Yolo in the opening game of the District 6 Championship Series as Renfree Field.
Both Oaks starting pitcher Tyler Robertson and Yolo's Brad Simmons pitched strong games up until the fifth when Yolo took a 3-0 lead.
Post 77 scored its first run in the top of the third as a pair of hits led to a one run Yolo advantage. But it was the fifth inning miscues that were the telling tale of the game.
Yolo's Brian Anderson started off the inning with a triple, followed by a Robertson strike out of Ryan Martin. Things fell apart then as Robertson walked the next batter to give Yolo two base runners. With Jeff Hoppin at the plate, a wild pitch scored Anderson, with Hawkins moving to third on the play. The throw to Oaks third baseman Jason Lomascola to try and get Hawkins got away and he came in to score to make it a 3-0 game.
Yolo added a fourth run in the seventh and the Oaks remained scoreless until the eighth when Post 383 scored its lone run of the game.
Right fielder Joe Burson led off with a hit to center field and with catcher Joe Gaggero at the plate moved to second on a passed ball. With one out, second baseman Chris Rinaudo walked, but he was erased as center fielder Kyle Richardson hit a ground ball to short. Burson finally scored on a hit to right center by first baseman Mickey Weisser to make it a 4-1 game.
The Oaks managed a leadoff hit by left fielder Charles Smith in the bottom of the ninth, but three outs followed and Yolo took the opening-game victory.
