Fair Oaks starting pitcher Mickey Weisser prepares to deliver a pitch in the Oaks game against the Chico Nuts at Woodland's Clark Field. Fair Oaks needed extra innings to win the Area 1 playoff game, 6-5.
Fair Oaks 6, Chico Nuts 5 (League: 16-4, Overall: 23-7) - July 23 @ Clark Field, Woodland - The Oaks needed extra innings to do it, but Post 383 stayed in the Area 1 Playoffs winner's bracket with a 10-inning, 6-5 victory over the Chico Nuts at Woodland's Clark Field.
Chico struck first as the Nuts scored in the top of the first, but Fair Oaks answered back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game with a run of their own.
With two outs, pitcher Mickey Weisser drew a walk and moved to second on first baseman Tyler Robertson's hit to left center. With left fielder Charles Smith at the plate, a wild pitch advanced both runners and then Smith's hit to left field scored Weisser to make it a 1-1 game. Unfortunately for the Oaks, Robertson was caught off third and tagged out after the run scored to end the inning.
Chico came back to retake the lead in the top of the second with another single run, but again the Oaks answered back in the bottom of the inning to re-tie the game at 2-2.
Third baseman Jason Lomascola led off the inning with a triple to right center. He scored as right fielder Joe Burson singled into left. The Oaks were looking for more as shortstop Derek Chase bunted down the first base line for a hit and with two outs an error put center fielder Ryan Stevens on to load the bases. Nuts starter Tyler Harvey wriggled out of the inning, however, with no further runs scoring.
Chico scored another pair of runs in the third for a 4-2 lead. This time the Oaks didn't answer back though and the Nuts held a two run advantage into the bottom of the fifth when the Oaks again tied the game up.
With two outs, Robertson doubled to right center. The ball was originally signaled as a home run, but then the umpires reversed themselves saying it bounced over the fence and called it a ground rule double. Smith followed with a slow roller toward second and beat the throw to first for a hit. With Lomascola at the plate, a ild pitch scored Robertson to make it 4-3 and then Smith scored as Lomascola sent a hit up the middle to make it a 4-4 game.
The Oaks faced a new pitcher in the bottom of the seventh as Casey Smyth took the mound. Weisser got a one out hit off the new hurler and with Robertson at the plate, a balk sent Weisser to second. Robertson then struck out, but the ball got away from catcher Beau Jacop and Robertson made it safely to first and Weisser scored to give the Oaks a 5-4 lead.
It looked like the Oaks would escape with the win -- but then Chico tied the game in the top of the ninth and Post 383 went out in order in the bottom of the inning.
Stevens replaced Weisser on the mound to start the 10th and got three quick outs. The Oaks then came back in the bottom of the inning to win the game.
With one out, Robertson got a hit to center field. A wild pitch with Smith at the plate moved him to second. Smith struck out, but a bad throw to first on the dropped third strike by the catcher got away and Robertson advanced to third with Smith making it all the way to second. Lomascola was then intentionally walked to load the bases and give Chico more options for a double play. But the next batter, Burson, spoiled Chico's plans as he sent a single into right field to score Robertson and give the Oaks the 6-5 win.
