Fair Oaks 9, Albuquerque 4 (League: 16-1, Overall: 18-1) - June 30 @ Laurel Creek Park, Fairfield, CA - Fair Oaks ran up its second win of the Western Amateur Baseball Federation Tournament with a come-from-behind victory over Albuquerque June 30 in Fairfield.
The Oaks and starting pitcher Robert Butler fell behind 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning as Albuquerque hit almost everything Butler threw to the plate, but Post 383 virtually shut Albuquerque down the rest of the way and edged their way back into the game for the win.
In the top of the third, Fair Oaks scored twice to cut its deficit to 3-2 as catcher Joe Holguin led off with a hit to left field. Left fielder Nikolai Rowe followed with a sharply hit ball to third that rolled between the legs of Albuquerque's Garret Schooley.
With one out, a passed ball advanced the runners to second and third and then Holguin scored on center fielder Ryan Stevens' ground ball to second. With first baseman Mickey Weisser at the plate, another passed ball allowed Rowe to score to make it 3-2.
The Oaks took the lead in the fifth inning as second baseman Steve Rinaudo led off by getting hit by a pitch. Stevens followed with a ground ball to short, but was able to beat the throw to first. Weisser then walked to load the bases, prompting an overly vocal Albuquerque coach to get ejected from the game by the home plate umpire.
The bottom fell out for Albuquerque then. Third baseman Austin Morgan got a hit to left to score Rinaudo and Stevens to make it a 4-3 Oaks lead. With right fielder Trevor Lewis at the plate, the runners advanced on a wild pitch and then Weisser scored on a second wild pitch to make it 5-3. Lewis walked and Albuquerque removed their starting pitcher Jacob Pacheco in favor of Eric Concini. The first batter he faced was Jason Lomascola and Concini promptly wild pitched Morgan home on the first pitch he threw to make it a 6-3 Oaks lead. Shortstop Chris Dennison then walked and with Holguin at the plate, Dennison stole second. The throw by the catcher went into center field and Lewis was able to score with Dennison making it into third. Holguin then popped to second, but the ball was dropped allowing Holguin to reach safely and Dennison to score to make it an 8-3 Oaks lead.
Albuquerque managed to score once in the bottom of the fifth to make it an 8-4 game, but Butler held the New Mexico team to a pair of walks and a hit over the final two innings to preserve the win.
The Oaks scored their final run in the top of the seventh as Lewis led off with a bunt to third for a hit. with one out, Dennison hit a ground ball to short. The throw went to second to try to get Lewis, but everyone was safe. Holguin walked to load the bases and then Rowe hit a ball to second, with the throw going to the shortstop covering second to try to get Holguin. But again the runner was safe and Lewis scored to make it a 9-4 Oaks lead.
Butler allowed two base runners with only one out in the bottom of the seventh, but neither got further than second base and the Oaks recorded their second win of the tournament.
