Sonoma Rebels 13, Fair Oaks 3 (League: 16-1, Overall: 18-2) - June 30 @ Laurel Creek Park, Fairfield, CA - Fair Oaks dropped a 13-3 decision to the Sonoma County Rebels June 30 in the Oaks' second game of the day.
Adding insult to injury, the game only went five innings as Sonoma gained a 10-run lead and the game was called after five due to the 10-Run Rule.
The Oaks actually only trailed by nine after the top of the fifth, but Sonoma's Mario Ausiello hit a first-pitch leadoff home run to up the margin to 10 to open the bottom of the inning.
Fair Oaks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as third baseman Jason Lomascola led off with a hit to left field. He was moved to second on a bunt by left fielder Nikolai Rowe and then scored on first baseman Andrew Leduc's hit to left center.
Sonoma came right back to score five times off the Oaks and starting pitcher Kyle Richardson and owned a 7-1 lead in the third, driving Richardson from the mound in favor of Robert Beard. Two more runs scored before the inning was over, giving the Rebels a 9-1 lead over the Oaks.
Second baseman Steve Rinaudo cut the deficit to 9-2 with a leadoff, first-pitch home run over the left field fence to start the fourth, but Sonoma came back in the bottom of the inning to score three more runs to take a 12-2 lead over the Oaks.
Post 383 added its final run of the game in the top of the fifth as center fielder Ryan Stevens led off with a hit to right field. With shortstop Chris Dennison at the plate, Stevens stole second and wound up on third when the throw by the catcher went into center field. Stevens then scored on a fly ball to right field by third baseman Jason Lomascola. The right fielder dropped the ball and Lomascola was safe at first with the Oaks trailing 12-3.
Then with two out, Leduc hit a ball to third. The throw was bad to first, however, and Leduc advanced to second with Lomascola moving to third. A walk to Rinaudo loaded the bases.
Another Oaks comeback? Nope! The next batter struck out to end the inning with the Oaks still trailing by nine runs.
Sonoma came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and Ausiello hit the first delivery by Beard over the right field fence, ending the game and leaving the Oaks with a 2-1 record after the opening round of the tournament.
