Fair Oaks 14, Yolo 9 (League: 2-0, Overall: 2-0) - June 4 @ Bella Vista High School - A 10-run outburst in the second inning gave the Oaks all the runs they needed to defeat Yolo 14-9 in the openeing game of a Saturday doubleheader against Post 77.
Yolo took a 2-0 lead off starting pitcher Robert Butler in the first inning, but the Oaks cut the deficit to one with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Center fielder Ryan Stevens led off the Oaks' first with a double to center field. He moved to third on a ground ball to second by second baseman Steve Rinaudo and then scored on first baseman Mickey Weisser's grounder - also to second - to make it a 2-1 game.
Butler put Yolo down in order in the top of the second and then Fair Oaks hammered Post 77 starter Matt Redford and reliever Dallas Cole for 10 runs in the bottom of the inning.
Left fielder Jason Lomascola started things off with a hit to deep short that resulted in no play to first. Right fielder Trevor Lewis followed with a ball to short, beating the throw to first to put two runners on. Catcher Joe Holguin then walked to load the bases and another walk to shortstop Chris Dennison forced in Lomascola from third to tie the game at 2-2.
With one out, Stevens drew a walk to push Lewis across the plate and give the Oaks a 3-2 lead. Rinaudo then sent a fly ball to right that allowed Holguin to tag and score and make it a 4-2 game. Weisser followed with a three-run homer to right to give the Oaks a 7-2 lead.
Redford then hit third baseman Austin Morgan with a pitch and with Lomascola at the plate, a pair of wild pitches advanced Morgan to third where he scored on Lomascola's ground ball to third that was booted, making it an 8-2 contest.
Lewis followed with a double down the left baseline, moving Lomascola to third and prompting a Yolo pitching change as Redford left the mound in favor of Cole.
Holguin was the first batter that Cole faced and he promptly gave up a three-run homer to left center to give the Oaks an 11-2 lead.
Yolo scored a lone run in the fifth, but the Oaks answered back in the bottom of the inning as designated hitter Robert Beard reached first with one out on a ground ball to third that resulted in a bad throw to first. Beard made it to second on the error to give the Oaks a runner in scoring position.
A wild pitch to Stevens advanced Beard to third and then Beard scored on Stevens hit back up the middle that deflected off the pitcher to give the Oaks a 12-3 advantage.
Yolo came back with three runs in the sixth, but again the Oaks answered back - scoring a pair of runs - to make it a 14-6 game.  Lomascola started things off with a bloop hit to center and scored on Lewis' double to left. Lewis moved to third on a ground ball to short by Holguin and then scored on a fly to left by Dennison for the 14-6 lead.
Brian Garber came in to pitch in the seventh for the Oaks, shutting Yolo down in that inning. But Post 77 managed three more runs in the eighth to close the score to 14-9. Andrew Leduc took over in the ninth, hitting the first batter he faced. But Leduc struck out the next two and got the fourth batter of the inning to fly out to center to end the game and give the Oaks the win.
