Fair Oaks 6, West Sacramento 5 (League: 17-1, Overall: 26-2) - July 15 @ Sacramento City College - After winning big in their first three playoff games, the Oaks got a wake up call as Post 383 had to come from behind to beat West Sacramento 6-5 at Sacramento City College.
Fair Oaks had beaten Folsom 19-3 the previous evening, but runs were hard to come by the next day as the Oaks found themselves down 5-2 entering the seventh inning.
Post 383 took a 1-0 lead for starting pitcher Robert Butler in the first inning with second baseman Kyle Richardson starting things off with one out as he was hit by a pitch. First baseman Mickey Weisser followed with a hit to right field that moved Richardson to third and he scored on third baseman Austin Morgan's ground ball to short.
The Oaks added another run in the fourth inning as center fielder Ryan Stevens led off with a triple to left center. He scored on catcher Joe Holguin's ground ball to second for a 2-0 Oaks lead.
West Sacramento struck back in the top of the fifth with a run to close the score to 2-1 and then took a 3-2 lead in the sixth with another pair of runs. Meanwhile, the Oaks usually potent offense seemed to desert them as Post 383 could only muster four hits through the first five innings.
West Sacramento scored another pair of runs in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead and things looked bleak for the Oaks, but then Post 383 seemed to wake up, scoring four times to retake the lead at 6-5.
With one out, right fielder Steve Rinaudo got a hit to left field, followed by a hit to left by Richardson and a double to right by Weisser that scored Rinaudo and Richardson.
A 3-1 count to Morgan prompted another pitching change. Morgan walked and then a hit to right field by Stevens scored Weisser to tie the game at 5-5. With Holguin at the plate, a wild pitch scored Morgan to give the Oaks a 6-5 lead. With two outs, Lomascola also walked to load the bases, but the Oaks were unable to bring any more runs across the plate.
Butler, who seemed to get stronger in the late innings, put West Sacramento down in order in the eighth inning and repeated the feat in the ninth inning to preserve the Oaks win.
The victory left the Oaks as the only undefeated team in the District 6 playoffs and guaranteed Fair Oaks a trip to the Area 1 playoffs in Eureka next week. It also set up a showdown for the District 6 title tomorrow with a 4 p.m. game at Sacramento City College.
The Oaks will play the winner of the matchup between West Sacramento and Yolo that was played Friday night. Should the Oaks win the game, they will be the District 6 champs. A loss will force a second game to decide the league title.
