Oaks first baseman Andrew LeDuc holds a Chico runner close to the bag during Fair Oaks' 4-3 loss to the Nuts on Friday.
Chico 4, Fair Oaks 3 (League: 15-3, Overall: 26-7-1) - July 28 @ Borman Field,  Yountville, Calif. - Fair Oaks' usually potent bats were held to only seven scattered hits on Friday as the Chico Nuts defeated Post 383 by a score of 4-3 in the second day of action of the Area 1 Tournament.
Fair Oaks, who collected 16 hits the previous day, hit the ball well, but usually right at a Chico defender. Despite this, the Oaks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second as left fielder Chris Johnson got a one out hit to center and then moved to third on catcher Jesse Olson's double to left field. Third baseman Justin Wilson drew a walk to load the bases. Chico appeared to be on the verge of getting out of the inning as second baseman Greg Polanski hit a potential double play ball to short. The throw went to second for an out, but then popped out of the glove of Chico second baseman Kevin Griffin and Polanski reached first safely while Johnson came in to score. The Oaks failed to get any more runs in, however, as the next batter struck out to end the inning.
Chico came right back in the bottom of the inning to take a lead the Nuts would never give up as a hit, error and another hit loaded the bases with no outs. Oaks starting pitcher Steve Rinaudo then hit Chico's designated hitter Ryan Fehling to force in a run and tie the game. A hit to center by first baseman Brandon Ottenwalter scored another run to make it 2-1. Rinaudo struck out the next batter, but then walked shortstop Taylor Clements to force in another run and give Chico a 3-1 lead.
All Fair Oaks could manage over the next four innings off Nuts starter Derrick Miramontes was a leadoff walk by shortstop Chris Dennison in the fourth. In the seventh, Dennison doubled to lead off the inning, but the Oaks couldn't bring him in as the next three batters recorded outs.
Chico got what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the seventh As Rinaudo gave up a leadoff walk to Chico third baseman Andres Quiring. With one out, center fielder Michael Maehl got a hit to left to move Quiring to second. But he was erased as the next batter grounded to third for a force play. Left fielder Cody Brown came through with a hit, however, to drive in Maehl and give Chico a 4-1 lead.
The Oaks made a game of it in the top of the eighth as Polanski hit a ball that went through shortstop for an error. Polanski moved to second on a Rinaudo ground out and then center fielder Kyle Richardson's hit to center scored Polanski with Richardson taking second on the throw home.
With two outs, right fielder Mike Sanchez doubled to left center to bring in Richardson and close the gap to 4-3. A ground out to short, however, ended the inning and the Oaks still trailed by one.
Rinaudo put Chico down in order in the bottom of the eighth and the Oaks came back with one more chance to tie or take the lead in the top of the ninth. Johnson led off the inning getting hit by a pitch to put the tying run on. But then the next three Fair Oaks batters went out in order to give Chico the victory.
