Fair Oaks Post 383 pitcher Chris Johnson prepares to send a pitch toward home plate.
Redding 7, Fair Oaks 4 (League: 15-3, Overall: 26-8-1) - July 29 @ Borman Field,  Yountville, Calif. - Fair Oaks took a 3-1 lead into the ninth inning, but the Redding Stars scored six times in the top of the ninth by virtue of a pair of walks, two hit batters, an error and two base hits to go up 7-3 en route to a 7-4 victory in the third day of Area 1 tournament play.
The loss eliminated Fair Oaks, which managed only one win - an 11-1 drubbing of B&L Properties on the tournament's first day.
The two starting pitchers - Chris Johnson for the Oaks and Trevor Decker of Redding - dueled evenly through the first three innings, but in the top of the fourth, Redding got on the scoreboard with a lone run after loading the bases. A hit, walk and hit batter put three Redding runners on with no outs. Johnson got the next batter to fly to left field, but then a ground out to second allowed the Stars' second baseman Justin Sybesma, who led off the inning with a hit, to score to make it a 1-0 game.
The Oaks had base runners in every inning through the sixth, but couldn't bring any of them across the plate. In the sixth, Fair Oaks loaded the bases after two were out as left fielder Robert Butler got a hit and catcher Bret Gibson and third baseman Greg Polanski drew back-to-back walks. But the next batter grounded out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, second baseman Kyle Richardson's leadoff home run over the right field fence tied the game at 1-1 and Oaks fans finally had something to cheer about.
In the eighth, the Oaks took the lead as designated hitter Jesse Olson led off with a double to center field. Butler followed with a bunt which was fielded by Redding catcher Ryan Cadaret, but his throw to first pulled first baseman Randall Burris' foot off the bag and the Oaks had two runners on with no outs. Unfortunately, the next two batters struck out, but with center fielder Steve Rinaudo at the plate, a wild pitch brought in Olson from third for a 2-1 lead and Rinaudo's hit to left scored Butler to make it a 3-1 game. Aggressive base running by Rinaudo may have prevented the Oaks from scoring again, however, as Rinaudo tried for third - all the way from first - on a passed ball with Richardson at the plate and was called out on a close play. But the Oaks owned a 3-1 lead entering the final inning.
Oaks fans may have wondered why Johnson was pulled off the mound in favor of LeDuc to start the ninth. Through the first eight innings, Johnson allowed only one run while scattering four hits. LeDuc immediately ran into problems as he hit the first batter he faced before recording a strikeout for the first out of the inning. But then the roof caved in. Cadaret got a hit and right fielder Jeremy McKellar walked to load the bases. LeDuc then hit left fielder Kyle Shreeve to force in a run and walked third baseman Jake Gill for another run to tie the game at 3-3. The next batter flew to center for an out on a great diving catch by Rinaudo, but McKellar was able to score from third to give Redding a 4-3 lead. The next batter, Decker, hit a slow roller toward short that neither Oaks shortstop Chris Dennison or Polanski backing him up from third could pick up. With the bases loaded, shortstop Gabriel MacDougall came to the plate. Hitless on the day, MacDougall drilled the ball to left center for a triple, clearing the bases and giving Redding a 7-3 lead. LeDuc got the next batter to pop weakly to second to end the inning.
The Oaks faced a new pitcher in the bottom of the ninth as Lawrence Holscher took the mound for the Stars. Richardson worked Holscher for a walk and then LeDuc doubled, sending Richardson to third. A fly ball to right by Oaks right fielder Mike Sanchez scored Richardson to close the gap to 7-4, but a fly out to right by Dennison and strikeout by Johnson ended the game - and the season - for the District 6 Champion Fair Oaks team.
