Roseville 3, Fair Oaks 2 (League: 2-1, Overall: 9-4) - June 14 @ Bella Vista High - Depsite a late-inning comeback attempt, Fair Oaks lost its second meeting of the year to Roseville with a 3-2 loss at Bella Vista High School.
Two days before, Roseville had beat the Oaks at Woodcreek High School 4-1. This game was a lot closer, but the outcome was still the same.
A leadoff hit and home run gave Roseville a 2-0 lead of the Oaks and starting pitcher Keith Jennette, but the Oaks closed the gap in the bottom of the first with a run of their own.
With one out, Jennette aided his own cause with a hit to left field and went to third as third baseman Abel Alcantar followed with a single to center field. With right fielder Mike Sanchez at the plate, a passed ball allowed Jennette to score to make it a 2-1 game.
The Oaks couldn't get any more runs across, however, as Sanchez flew out to left and first baseman Charlie Robertson grounded out to second.
A three-hit second inning got Roseville its run back as the visitors took a 3-1 lead over the Oaks. Post 383 bats were relatively quiet until the fifth, when the Oaks again closed the gap to one run.
Catcher Ben Schwefel led off the inning with a hit to center field. With one out, center fielder Brian Stamps bunted Schwefel to second and then he scored on a double to left field by Jennette to make it a 3-2 game.
John Constance relieved Jennette on the mound to start the sixth and despite two walks got out of the inning on a double play ball to short.
The Oaks almost tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but may have been robbed on a close play at first after two were out. With one out, Robertson walked and then moved to second on a ground out by pinch hitter Mark Lincoln. Josh Glaser went in to run for Robertson at second. The next batter, shortstop Cameron Barr hit a ground ball to third that was bobbled slightly. A weak throw to first followed, but in a very close play at the bag, the umpire called Barr out to end the inning. In the minds of many of the Fair Oaks faithful, the call should have gone the other way.
Glaser took over on the mound in the seventh and despite a leadoff wlak and one out intentional walk, got a strike out and fly ball to end the inning with the Oaks still trailing 3-2.
Fair Oaks made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh with one out as Josh Britt hit a ball to short that went between the fielder's legs to give the Oaks a base runner. Stamps then hit a ball to third with the throw going to second to get Britt, but Britt slid in hard disrupting the double play try and the ball went wide of first allowing Stamps to motor into second base. A groundout followed, however, giving Roseville the 3-2 win and dropping the Oaks overall record to 9-4 on the year.
