Fair Oaks 6, Reno 2 (League: 4-1, Overall: 12-4) - June 17 @ Bella Vista High School - Fair Oaks added another non-league win to its record as the Oaks beat the visiting Reno Muckdogs 6-2 at Bella Vista High School.
Oaks starting pitcher Matt Haney sent Reno down in order in the top of the first and the Oaks came back to score their first two runs of the game in the bottom of the inning.
Second baseman Keith Jennette led off with a hit to left field and then with center fielder Brian Stamps at the plate, Jennette stole second. Stamps eventually struck out, but the third strike was dropped by the catcher and got away forcing a throw to first.. An alert Jennette took third on the play. Catcher Abel Alcantar then got a hit to left to score Jennette and then with two outs, Alcantar also came home on a hit to right field by designated hitter Robert Beard.
The game settled into a pitcher's duel between Haney and Reno starter Will Honjas over the next few innings. Haney was replaced on the mound in the fourth by Mark Lincoln, who also shut the Muckdogs down.
Reno finally got a run home in the top of the fifth after a leadoff hit and walk. The leadoff batter was erased at third on a bunt attempt, but after a double steal, a ground ball to second brought in the runner from third to make it a 2-1 game.
The Oaks broke the game open in the bottom of the fiifth, however, as shortstop Cameron Barr led off with a hit to left center field. With Jon Lang at the plate, a wild pickoff throw from the pitcher allowed Barr to make it all the way to third and he scored on Lang's hit to right field to make it a 3-1 game. Greg Polanski followed with a hit to left center that sent Lang to third. Jennette was the next batter, but he hit a ground ball to first and the throw came home to get Lang at the plate. With a pair of runners still on base, Stamps came up and hit a home run into the wind over the left field fence to score Polanski and Jennette ahead of himself to make it a 6-1 game.
Michael Garber came in to pitch the top of the sixth against the Muckdogs, but immediately got in trouble as three straight base hits loaded the bases with no outs. The fourth batter of the inning also got a hit to bring in one run, but the Oaks defense got an out at third as the runner from second tried to advance and then Garber struck out the next batter for the second out of the inning. The next batter flew out to center field to end the bases loaded rally with only one run scoring and the score standing at 6-2 in favor of the Oaks.
Fair Oaks got a base runner in the bottom of the inning as Taylor Sanders reached via error, but the Oaks were unable to score. Garber sent the Muckdogs down in order in the top of the seventh and ended the game with a called third strike to give the Oaks the 6-2 win.
