Fair Oaks 5, West Sacramento 1 (League: 8-1, Overall: 17-4) - June 24 @ Bella Vista High School - Fair Oaks completed a two-day, three-game sweep of West Sacramento with a 5-1 victory at Bella Vista High School.
The Oaks and starting pitcher Robert Beard fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but came back in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead and never looked back.
Shortstop Keith Jennette led off the inning with a walk and then went to third on a hit to left center by right fielder Abel Alcantar. First baseman Mike Sanchez followed with a walk and then Jennette scored on a sacrifice fly to center by catcher Bret Gibson. Beard, the next batter, was hit by a pitch, and then left fielder Jon Lang's fly to right allowed Alcantar to tag and score from third to make it a 2-1 game.
The Oaks added two more runs in the fifth inning as Sanchez led off with a walk. He was bunted to second by Gibson as the ball went back to the pitcher and the throw went to first. With two outs, Lang drew a walk and then a hit to left field by center fielder Troy Spivey brought home Sanchez to make it a 3-1 game. Third baseman Brian Stamps was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then second baseman Greg Polanski hit a ball to third and beat the throw to first for a hit and an RBI as Lang came in to score to make it a 4-1 game.
Michael Garber relieved Beard on the mound in the eighth inning and sent West Sacramento down in order, including striking out the first two batters he faced. The Oaks came back in the bottom of the inning to score their final run of the game for a 5-1 lead.
Taylor Sanders led off with a double to right field and then with one out scored on Matt Haney's hit to right field.
Ben Schwefel took the mound for the Oaks in the top of the ninth and although West Sacramento loaded the bases with no outs, Schwefel managed to pitch out of the inning with no runs scoring.
An error and two consecutive hits loaded them up and then Schwefel got the next batter to hit a sharp liner right at the second baseman that was caught for the first out. A flip to shortstop doubled the runner off for the second out, and then the next batter grounded out to third to end the game and give the Oaks the 5-1 win and series sweep.
