Southside 3, Fair Oaks 2 (League: 8-2, Overall: 17-5) - June 26 @ Bella Vista High School - Fair Oaks dropped only its second league game of the season as visiting Southside nipped the Oaks 3-2 at Bella Vista High School.
The Oaks trailed 3-0 most of the game despite a fine pitching performance by Keith Jennette, who gave up only three hits in nine innings of work.
Southside scored once in the first inning and added another two runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Oaks went out in order in three of the first four innings, finally mounting a legitimate scoring threat in the bottom of the fifth as center fielder Brian Stamps beat out a one out bunt for a base hit. With shortstop Cameron Barr at the plate, Stamps stole second. Barr walked to put two runners on and then with third baseman Taylor Sanders at the plate, a double steal moved the runners to second and third. Two outs followed, however, ending the inning with the Oaks still trailing 3-0.
Post 383 finally scored in the eighth as second baseman Greg Polanski led off the inning with a hit to right field. Jennette then hit a ball to short that was booted putting two runners on. With one out and left fielder Bret Gibson at the plate, a wild pitch advanced the runenrs. Gibson then sent a ground ball to first that scored Polanski to make it a 3-1 game.
Southside went down in order in the top of the ninth and the Oaks came back to make a game of it in the bottom of the inning. Right fielder Robert Beard led off the inning with a hit to left field. With Stamps at the plate, a passed ball moved Beard to second. Stamps struck out, but then a ground ball by Barr to short moved Beard to third. He scored on Troy Spivey's hit to right to make it a 3-2 game. With Polanski at the plate, a wild pitch sent Spivey to second. Polanski then sent a ball to third with the throw going to first. A head first dive into the bag beat the throw and Polanski was safe, but Spivey was unable to advance from second on the play. Southside sent a new pitcher to the mound to face the next batter - Jennette. Unfortunately, Jennette swung at the first pitch, sending a ground ball to short with the toss going to second to get Polanski and end the game.
The loss dropped the Oaks league record to 8-2, 17-5 overall.
