Fair Oaks 11, Manhart 1 (League: 14-4, Overall: 29-8) - July 15 @ Bella Vista High School - Fair Oaks closed out its regular season on Sunday with an 11-1 win over Manhart at Bella Vista High School.
Even though Manhart was able to load the bases off Oaks starter Mark Lincoln in the first inning, the visitors came away scoreless due to an inning-ending double play.
The Oaks came right back in the bottom of the inning to take a lead they'd never give up as two runs came across to give Post 383 the early 2-0 advantage.
With two out, right fielder Abel Alcantar started things off with a hit to left field. With left fielder Bret Gibson at the plate, Alacantar was off running as Gibson sent a hit to right. Alcantar made it safely to third and then scored on designated hitter Charlie Robertson's hit to right field. Center fielder Troy Spivey followed with a ground ball to third. The throw to first was bad, however, and Spivey was safe with Gibson socring to make it a 2-0 game.
Lincoln struck out the first batter he faced in the second, but then gave up a base hit to right center to give Manhart a man on with one out. The next batter hit into another inning-ending double play, however, to keep the score at 2-0.
The Oaks didn't score again until the fifth when four runs came home for a 6-0 advantage. Second baseman Greg Polanski led off with a ball to short, but beat the throw to first for a base hit. First baseman Matt Haney then got a hit to left and advanced to second with Polanski moving to third as the ball got by the left fielder. Alcantar then hit a ground ball to short to score Polanski and a base hit by Gibson to left scored Haney to make it 4-0. Robertson, the next batter, reached base on an error as he hit a ball to third with the throw to first going wide of its mark. Spivey followed with a hit to left to score Gibson and a pop to short by shortstop Taylor Sanders was dropped for another Manhart error that allowed Robertson to score and make it a 6-0 game.
Lincoln sent Manhart down in order in the top of the sixth and the Oaks scored again in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-0 lead.
With one out, Haney was hit by a pitch and with Alcantar at the plate, moved to second on a wild pitch. Alcantar then got a hit to left field to score Haney to give the Oaks a 7-0 advantage.
Fair Oaks added another pair of runs in the seventh as Jon Lang beat out a one out ground ball to short for a hit. Brian Stamps then sent a line drive off a leaping base umpire for a hit and then catcher Ben Schwefel walked to load the bases. Josh Glaser followed with a double to left center to score both Lang and Stamps to make it a 9-0 game.
Robertson came in the pitch the top of the eighth for the Oaks and gave up a leadoff infield hit before getting the next two outs. Another hit and an error led to Manhart's first and only run of the game to make it a 9-1 contest. Robertson got the next batter to ground out to second to end the inning.
The Oaks faced a new pitcher in the bottom of the eighth and promptly added another pair of runs for the final 11-1 margin. Alcantar and Mike Sanchez led off with back to back walks, but Sanchez was erased as Michael Garber hit a ground ball to short. Garber beat the throw to first, however, to avoid the double play. Lang then sent a fly ball to left that allowed Alcantar to tag and score from third to make it 10-1. Stamps followed with a walk and then a Schwefel hit to left scored Garber to make it an 11-1 game.
John Constance took the mound in the top of the ninth and got two quick outs before giving up a walk and a base hit. But the next batter lofted a fly to center field that was collected for an out to end the game and give the Oaks the victory.
The win improved Fair Oaks' league record to 14-4, 29-8 overall.
The Oaks' 29 wins thus far this season ties Post 383's second best win mark for the entire season.
In 2005, Fair Oaks finished with an overall record of 29-4. Fair Oaks should easily break that mark as they head into the playoffs and could also set a new mark for most games in a season. The 1997 team played 43 games finishing with a 33-10 record.
