Yolo 5, Fair Oaks 2 (League: 0-0, Overall: 3-1) - May 28 @ Land Park - Had it been tomorrow instead of today, the outcome may have been different. As it was, Fair Oaks lost a 5-2 decision to Yolo Post 77 in the championship game of the Memorial Day Tournament in Land Park.
The Oaks were still without a number of their players due to Bella Vista High School's involvement with the Division III baseball playoff championship game being held later in the afternoon at American River College.
Yolo jumped out to a 4-0 lead off Oaks starting pitcher Taylor Sanders in the first inning. Post 77's first four batters reached base on a pair of walks and a pair of hits. The second walk forced in the first run and then a sacrifice fly made it a 2-0 contest. Another pair of hits sandwiching a strikeout brought in two more runs to make it a 4-0 game.
Michael Garber replaced Sanders in the middle of Yolo's third after a one out hit and walk gave Post 77 two base runners. Garber managed to get out of the inning with no Yolo runners scoring and then the Oaks came back in the top of the fourth for their first run of the game.
With two outs, first baseman Mike Sanchez tripled to right center and then scored on a hit to left by catcher Bret Gibson to cut Yolo's margin to 4-1.
Yolo got the run back, however, in the bottom of the sixth as a one out walk and a pair of hits made it a 5-1 game. Fair Oaks didn't go quietly, however, as the Oaks came back with a run in the top of the seventh.
Right fielder Josh Glaser led off with a triple to center field. The next batter was center fielder Brian Stamps. He struck out, but the catcher dropped the ball and then made a bad throw to first which allowed Stamps to reach safely and Glaser to score to make it 5-2. But Stamps tried to make it into second as the ball rolled into right field and was thrown out for the first out of the inning. Pinch hitter Robert Beard walked, but then third baseman Josh Britt rolled a ball straight at the second baseman which turned into a double play to end the game and Fair Oaks' chances for a repeat at last year's title.
