Fair Oaks 9, Roseville 8 (League: 3-0, Overall: 12-0) - June 9 @ Bella Vista High School - Only a few days before, Fair Oaks jumped all over Roseville in the first inning of their game, scoring four runs en route to a 16-4 thrashing of their opponents at Woodcreek High School.
Roseville returned the favor on Monday when they visited Fair Oaks, scoring four times in the first as the Oaks committed three errors in the teams' second of three meetings this season.
The Oaks chipped away at Roseville's lead in the bottom of the first for starting pitcher Michael Garber, putting two runs on the board. Center fielder Ryan Dettman led off with a hit to right field. With first baseman Ben Schwefel at the plate, a bad pickoff throw from the catcher to first went into right field allowing Dettman to take second. Schwefel then got a hit to right center that scored Dettman to make it 4-1. Catcher Bret Gibson followed with a hit to left and then with one out, right fielder Josh Glaser got a hit past the shortstop that allowed Schwefel to score to make it a 4-2 game.
Roseville came right back in the top of the second, however, scoring two runs of their own to make it a 6-2 lead.
The Oaks got one run back in the bottom of the inning as left fielder Cole Carter led off with a walk. He scored on shortstop Cameron Barr's double to center field.
A one out walk to Dettman followed by a two out walk to Gibson, loaded the bases for the Oaks, but Post 383 couldn't bring any more runs home and Roseville retained a 6-3 lead.
Fair Oaks loaded the bases again in the third without scoring as Glaser led off with a walk. After two were out, Barr also drew a walk and then third baseman Jeff Nickell got a hit to short left. Dettman struck out, however, ending the inning.
Taylor Sanders, who had come in to pitch the third for the Oaks held Roseville scoreless until he was relieved in the sixth by Charlie Robertson. Robertson pitched two scoreless innings before being relieved by Bryce Bandilla in the eighth. Bandilla gave up a leadoff walk before striking out the next two batters, but then a double brought home Roseville's seventh run for a 7-3 lead.
The Oaks weren't ready to give up though. A five run eighth inning gave Post 383 a one run lead at 8-7, and it appeared Post 383 would be heading for victory. Barr led off the inning with a walk and then scored on a one out double to left by Dettman. Dettman kept running on the throw home and wound up on third. He scored on a ground ball by Schwefel that went through the second baseman's legs to make it 7-5. The next batter struck out, but then Bandilla drew a walk with the ball getting away from the catcher and Schwefel advancing to third on the play. Cody Osburn then drew a walk to load the bases and a Josh Britt hit to left brought home Schwefel and Bandilla to tie the game at 7-7. Osburn made it all the way to third on the throw home. The Oaks then ran their first and third pickoff play, with Osburn coming home to score to make it 8-7 on a bad throw trying to get Britt who had taken a huge lead off first.
Bandilla pitched into the ninth with a one run lead, getting a quick ground out for the first out of the inning. The next batter, however, sent the ball over the left field fence to tie the game again at 8-8 and give Roseville new life. Bandilla got the next two batters to fly out to end the inning.
Not to be outdone, the Oaks came back to win it in the ninth on a costly mistake by Roseville's catcher. With one out, Dettman drew a walk With Schwefel at the plate, Dettman stole second and then moved to third on Schwefel's ground ball to second. The next batter would have been Gibson, but Roseville's catcher made a sloppy throw back to the mound out of reach of the pitcher and Dettman charged for home and scored to give the Oaks the 9-8 victory.
