Fair Oaks 15, West Sacramento 1 (League: 9-0, Overall: 21-2) - June 23 @ Bridgeway Lakes Park - Capped off by an 11 run ninth inning, including a grand slam home run by shortstop Cameron Barr, Fair Oaks Post 383 beat West Sacramento 15-1 at Bridgeway Lakes Park.
It was another slow start for the Oaks, as they west up 1-0 in the second inning and held that lead until the top of the eighth.
In the second, left fielder Cole Carter led off with a hit to left field and then with designated hitter Charlie Robertson at the plate, moved to second on a passed ball. Robertson eventually walked and then second baseman Josh Britt lined a ball back off the pitcher for a hit that loaded the bases with no outs. Unfortunately, what could have been a big inning didn't develop. The next batter, third baseman Taylor Sanders hit into a double play that allowed Carter to score from third to make it 1-0. Barr then popped out to second to end the inning.
The game remained 1-0 until the eighth when the Oaks scored three times for a 4-0 lead.
Oaks starting pitcher Michael Garber pitched seven excellent innings against West Sacramento, striking out 10 while giving up only two hits (both to the same batter).
In the top of the eighth, Barr got a one out walk to start things off and then scored on a hit to center field by Oaks center fielder Ryan Dettman. Barr had been running on the pitch and went all the way to third on Dettman's hit. The throw to third got away and Barr scored with Dettman taking his place on third. Justin Haley followed with a triple to left field to score Dettman and force a West Sacramento pitching change. The next batter, right fielder Jon Lang, greeted the new hurler with a double to center that skipped off the end of the outfielder's glove, allowing Haley to score for a 4-0 lead.
Lyle Hobart came in to pitch the bottom of the inning for the Oaks, putting West Sacramento down in order and bringing Post 383 back up to bat in the top of the ninth.
Back-to-back hits by Robertson to right and Britt to left started off the inning and with pinch hitter Bryce Bandilla at the plate, a passed ball advanced the runners to second and third. Bandilla then sent a double into left field to bring home both runners and make it a 6-0 Oaks lead. Andrew Gutierez went in to run for Bandilla and then advanced to third on a fly ball to center by Barr. This brought about another West Sacramento pitching change, but it didn't help much as Dettman drew a walk off the new pitcher and Haley followed with a hit to right to score Gutierez. Lang then hit a ball to short that was booted and the Oaks had the bases loaded.
Catcher Bret Gibson got a hit to left center that scored Dettman and Haley to make it a 9-0 game and Josh Glaser followed with a double to left to score Lang for a 10-0 lead. West Sacramento put yet another pitcher on the mound, but their streak of bad luck continued as Robertson popped the ball to third and it dropped in to load the bases.
With two outs, Gutierez was hit by a pitch to force Gibson in from third to make it an 11-0 game. It was then Barr's turn again and he blasted the ball over the left field fence for a grand slam home run to give the Oaks a 15-0 lead. In all, Fair Oaks sent 14 batters to the plate in the nnith and scored 11 runs.
West Sacramento got its only run of the game in the bottom of the ninth after two were out. A bad throw on a ground ball to second gave West Sacramento a base runner -- advancing to second as the throw got by the first baseman. A fly ball to right field then dropped in to score the run, but the Oaks ended the inning on the same play as the base runner got caught off first and was tagged out to end the game.
