B&L Properties 1, Fair Oaks 0 (League: 12-2, Overall: 27-6) - July 5 @ Laurel Creek Park, Fairfield - For the third straight game an Oaks pitcher tossed a gem, as Charlie Robertson only gave up one hit to B&L Properties. But unfortunately for the Oaks, their usually hot bats cooled considerably overnight as Post 383 was shut out by a score of 1-0 and eliminated from the WABF Tournament in Fairfield.
B&L's only run of the game came in the fifth inning as nothing seemed to go right for the Oaks. After one was out, Robertson struck out the next batter, but the ball went off catcher Ben Schwefel's glove and the runner made it safely to first base. Then a ball in the dirt got by Schwefel again and the base runner advanced to second. A fly ball moved him to third and with two outs a hit to right field scored the run to give B&L Properties a 1-0 lead.
After scoring 25 runs in their last two games, you'd figure the Oaks still had a chance, but it was not the case. Base runners (and good luck) were few and far between for Fair Oaks.
In the first, a one out hit by left fielder Michael Garber got things started, but then an apparent hit by catcher Ben Schwefel went for naught as the ball fell between three players converging in center field. Garber had to hold up in case the ball was caught and then was gunned down at second as the ball was recovered and quickly thrown in.
In the third inning, a two out double by shortstop Cameron Barr was followed by a high bouncer by Garber -- just out of reach of the third baseman midway between second and third. Barr made it safely to third with Garber in at first. But a fly ball to center by the next batter ended the Oaks hopes.
Fair Oaks went out in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as B&L took its 1-0 lead in the fifth. The Oaks had one last chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh as center fielder Josh Glaser reached base on an error with no outs. The next batter, however, hit into a double play and a fly out to deep left center ended the game spoiling Robertson's one hitter.
The loss eliminated Fair Oaks from the tournament with B&L advancing to Sunday's championship game against the Yolo/Oakland winner.
