Yolo 3, Fair Oaks 2 (League: 13-3, Overall: 28-8) - July 12 @ Clark Field, Woodland - (This article excerpt was taken from the Woodland Daily Democrat, July 14, 2008) - Trailing 2-0, Post 77 needed to rally in the final two frames for three runs to beat rival Fair Oaks in the final league game of the season.
After not mustering much offense off of Fair Oaks pitchers Ben Schwefel, Michael Garber and Taylor Sanders, errors played a big part in the victory.
Yolo trimmed the lead in the eighth after Adrian Perez singled, Devan England walked, Joel Baroody was hit by a pitch and Shawn Reynolds hit a sacrifice fly.
Suavae Cook led off the bottom of the ninth with a grounder to third base that the third baseman booted. Garret Wright bunted Cook to second. Mike Turay hit a grounder to third that the third baseman threw over the first baseman's head. Fair Oaks intentionally walked Perez to load the bases with one out.
Joe Whitehead then hit a sharp line drive to right field that likely would have been a single if Fair Oaks' outfielders hadn't been playing shallow.
With two outs and only one position player left available on Post 77's bench, Coach Matt Castles' only option was to send in pinch-hitter Zach Vawter-Scoggins, who hadn't played in two weeks and could barely put any weight on his leg after taking a line drive off his shin in a game against Roseville.
Vawter-Scoggins hit a liner to left field that was hooking away from the left fielder who had to reach across his body to make the catch, but it dropped out of his glove and the tying run scored.
The throw to the plate beat Turay, but on the second hop it ate up the catcher Schwefel. Turay managed to slide around Schwefel and recover to come back and touch the plate for the winning run.
"You never wanna finish the season on a losing streak after we lost to Chico on Wednesday so it was big for us," Castles said. "It was an important win and now we feel like we can beat them. At the same time we're going to have to get by one or even both of their aces at some point and we know they're looming."
