Fair Oaks 12, Yolo 6 (League:
13-3, Overall:
30-8)
- July 16 @ Clark Field, Woodland -
(Story by Sean
Swaby, 7/17/08, Woodland
Daily Democrat) - Yolo Post 77 had a long night on
Wednesday night in a 12-6 loss to Fair Oaks at Clark Field.
If they're going to win the District 6 Tournament, it's going to
require that they endure a considerably longer day today. And maybe
Friday, too.
Yolo will have to take the long route to the District 6 championship,
needing a win today at 4 p.m. against West Sac, a 10-2 winner over
Manhart in the early game on Wednesday. Then they will have to defeat
Fair Oaks in a second game today just to force a do-or-die championship
game Friday night in the double elimination tournament.
Post 77's longtime rivals weren't fooled by starter Scotty Grunert as
they took a quick 6-0 lead after two innings off of Grunert and fellow
lefty Zach Vawter-Scoggins.
Grunert allowed a run in the first inning only on a
sacrifice fly that was a
close play at the plate. But after he allowed a single, a ground-rule
double, an error and another double to begin the second, Yolo coach
Matt Castles pulled him in favor of Vawter-Scoggins.
Vawter-Scoggins, who hadn't pitched in over two weeks since getting hit
on the shin by a line drive, gave up three RBI singles after relieving
Grunert, but eventually settled down and didn't allow another hit until
giving up a fifth-inning home run to Cole Carter.
Although Fair Oaks' highly-touted lefty Bryce Bandilla didn't shut down
Yolo, but the six runs of early run support was plenty considering when
Yolo and Fair Oaks meet up the games are traditionally low scoring.
Post 77 rattled four runs off of Bandilla and closed within two at 6-4,
but
Fair Oaks responded by scoring a run in the fifth and two in the sixth
and seventh to put the game out of reach.
The middle of Post 77's order was particularly potent as Garret Wright,
Cody Keefer and Mike Turay combined to go 10-for-17 and had all five of
their RBI, but Post 77 finished the game stranding 17 baserunners.
Adrian Perez struck out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the
ninth to end the game.
