Fair Oaks 1, Yolo 0 (League: 13-3, Overall: 31-8) - July 17 @ Clark Field, Woodland - (By John Schwefel) Fair Oaks' Cody Osburn and Yolo's Adrian Perez squared off in the annual fight for the District 6 Championship Thursday night. When the dust cleared, Fair Oaks owned the title by virtue of a 1-0 victory at Clark Field in Woodland.
The Oaks threatened in the first inning on singles by Cameron Barr and Bret Gibson, but the runners were left stranded when Cole Carter grounded out to short.
Andrew Gutierrez opened the bottom of the third with a sharp single to left, but Perez tightened his belt and retired the top of the Oaks order on two infield popups and a groundout.
Justin Haley singled with one out in the fifth, but Perez again slammed the door by wiffing Gutierrez and Ryan Dettman.
The only run of the game scored in the sixth when Ben Schwefel singled to the right field corner, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Barr, and with two outs scored when Carter jumped on the first pitch and doubled to the base of the left field fence.
The Oaks left the bases loaded in the seventh when Haley and Gutierrez reached base safely and Schwefel walked. Perez again worked out of the jam when, with a full count, he caught Barr looking at strike three.
Cody Osburn started and scattered seven hits, three walks and  two hit batsmen over seven and two-thirds innings before being relieved by Michael Garber with two on and two out in the eighth inning.
Garber struck out Sean Reynolds to snuff out the Yolo rally. Garber walked the leadoff hitter in the ninth, but then struck out two of the next three batters to end the game, earn the save and preserve the win for Osburn.
Osburn deftly mixed fastballs, changeups and an occasional curveball to keep Yolo off balance all night long.
Osburn also helped his own cause by fielding his position very well and forcing out the lead runners on several comebackers and bunts during the course of the game. Yolo's Adrian Perez scattered eight Oaks hits over eight innings in the loss.
