Fair Oaks 7, Oroville Post 95 1 (League:
13-3, Overall:
33-9)
- July 25 @ Laurel Creek Park, Fairfield - (By John Schwefel) - The
game was scoreless through the first three innings with Oroville's
Rusty Ward and the Oaks' Cody Osburn each striking out four batters.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning,
Oroville shortstop, R. DeLozier, hit a solo home run to left field to
give Oroville a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth, the Oaks sent 10 batters to the plate and
scored four times to take a 4-1 lead. The inning started with Cameron
Barr getting plunked with a pitch and advancing to third by stealing
two bases while designated hitter Bret Gibson was working the count,
eventually drawing a walk. Center fielder, Jon Lang, replacing
Cole Carter, singled sharply to left, driving in Barr and advancing
Gibson to second. With one out, right fielder, Michael Garber,
also singled to left,
advancing Gibson to third and Lang to second. Ward's day came to an end
when he plunked third baseman,
Andrew Gutierrez, to bring home Gibson with the Oaks' second run.
Oroville's relief pitcher Todd Borcher was greeted by a two run single
off the bat of the right fielder Josh Glazer before retiring the side.
Oroville threatened in the bottom of the sixth, when
the first two
batters reached base, but Osburn squelched the rally by striking out
two of the next three batters.
Oroville brought in their third pitcher, Storm
Rodriguez, after Gibson opened the top of the seventh with a single to
left field. Lang immediately doubled to deep center field,
moving Gibson to third. The Oroville lefthander then
retired the next three Oaks batters to end the uprising.
The Oaks' Cody Osburn scattered seven hits through
seven innings, striking out eight and not issuing any free passes.
The Oaks brought in right hander Lyle Hobart to
pitch the eighth and ninth innings. Oroville's Justin Lamb greeted
Hobart with a single to center, but he was erased when catcher Ben
Schwefel back picked to first base after Oroville's Brian Garcia struck
out swinging. Hobart then struck out Fox on a foul tip that was gloved
by Schwefel.
The Oaks gave Hobart some breathing room by scoring
three times in the top of the ninth. After one out, Lang reached first
on an error by Brandon Pope. Lang broke for second on the first pitch
to Justin Haley and advanced all the way to third when the pitch
bounded past Post 95's catcher.
Haley subsequently walked and moved all the way to
third, while Lang scored on a single by Michael Garber. Haley
scored when pinch hitter Taylor Sanders hit a sacrifice fly to deep
right field. Garber stole second on the first pitch to Josh Glaser and
moved to third when Glaser reached base on an infield chopper. Glaser
scored the Oaks' seventh and final run when Josh Britt floated a soft
single into right field.
Hobart struck out the first two hitters in the ninth
before surrendering successive singles to the eighth and ninth place
hitters. Hobart earned the save by striking out Oroville's
leadoff hitter for the fifth strikeout in two innings of work.
