Defense, hitting and pitching mixed together perfectly Saturday as the Fair Oaks Post 383 American Legion team walloped their Roseville counterparts 10-0 at Roseville High School.
Fair Oaks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as second baseman Joey Grawey led off the game as a hit batsman and was moved to second on a bunt to third base by Kcatcher Kent Guthrie. Center fielder Ryan Brennan then got a hit to score Grawey with the first run of the game.

Fair Oaks added its second run of the game in the top of the third inning after two were out, as Brennan got his second hit of the game to left field. With first baseman Brandon Straw at the plate, a wild pitch sent Brennan to second. Straw's hit to right field scored Brennan for a 2-0 Fair Oaks lead.
Post 383 went up 8-0 in the fourth inning as 10 batters came to the plate. Right fielder Brandon Muskopf led off with a ground ball to shortstop. The throw to first, however, was bad and Muskopf reached base safely. Shortstop Dave Scott followed with a walk and then left fielder Scott Kinsey doubled to center field to score Muskopf for a 3-0 lead. Scott also tried to score on the play, but was thrown out at the plate.
With one out, pitcher Mike Lincoln walked. Grawey got a hit to right field scoring Kinsey to make it 4-0. Guthrie followed with another walk to load the bases and Brennan's sacrifice to left scored Lincoln for a 5-0 lead.
Straw then got a hit to right, scoring Grawey for a 6-0 lead and driving Roseville's pitcher out of the game. The new Roseville hurler had about as much luck as his predecessor, giving up a hit to center field to third baseman Jeff Cooke which scored Guthrie and Straw for an 8-0 lead.
Fair Oaks added run No. 9 in the top of the sixth inning as Guthrie drew a one out walk to start things off. Brennan got a hit to center field sending Guthrie to third. Guthrie went into the base limping, however, after pulling a muscle rounding second and had to be replaced by pinch runner Mike McDowell. With Straw at the plate, a passed ball sent Brennan to second. Straw then sent a fly into left which scored McDowell and allowed Brennan to advance to third. The next batter struck out, however, to end the inning.
Fair Oaks scored its final run of the game in the seventh off yet another Roseville pitcher as Scott got on base via error with one out. With Eric Brolin at the plate, Scott stole second. Brolin had a check swing dribbler that the catcher picked up and fired to first for the second out of the inning. Lincoln, however, got the run home as he hit a ground ball to shortstop. The throw to first was low allowing Scott to score for the 10-0 lead.
Lincoln struck out 11 in the game before exiting in the bottom of the eighth in favor of Chris Read. Read got the side out in order - with one strike out - despite giving up a double to the second batter of the inning who was called out at third trying to stretch the two bagger into a triple.
Fair Oaks loaded the bases in the ninth on walks to Cooke, Scott and Read, but couldn't score. Sam Moses came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth for Fair Oaks, striking out the first two batters he faced before giving up a bloop single to left. Moses struck out the next batter to end the game and give Fair Oaks the 10-0 victory.
Saturday, Fair Oaks hosted Roseville in a doubleheader at Bella Vista High School. This time, however, Roseville turned the tables on Fair Oaks, sweeping the twin bill from Post 383.
In the first game, Roseville jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second, but Bella Vista rallied with two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit in half.
With two outs, Scott doubled to left field after Roseville left fielder Gordon Gardnier lost the high fly in the sun. Kinsey was hit by a pitch to put a second runner on base and then McDowell, Fair Oaks' pitcher, walked to load the bases. Grawey then got a hit to left to score Scott and Kinsey to make it 4-2.
Post 383 closed the deficit by another run in the fourth as Scott lined the ball over the left field fence for a home run to bring the score to 4-3. Roseville added a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth for a 7-3 lead. More runs followed in the top of the ninth as Roseville extended its lead to 11-3.
Fair Oaks rallied in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs for the final margin of 11-6. B.J. Green led off the inning with a hit to right. Brennan then got a hit as he bounced a ground ball off the second baseman's chest and beat the throw to put two runners on. Straw then got a hit to center, scoring both Green and Brennan to make the score 11-5. With one out, catcher Shawn Lucchesi doubled to left sending Straw to third. Straw scored as Scott hit a grounder to second. The throw to first pulled the fielder off the bag and Scott was safe. Fair Oaks was unable to get any additional runners home, however, despite loading the bases and Roseville took the first game 11-6.
Post 383 didn't have any better luck in the second game, dropping the contest by a score of 4-0. Tim Fuhrman pitched five innings in the loss in his first start for the Fair Oaks team. Brolin pitched the remaining two innings for Post 383.
Fair Oaks was scheduled to face Post 61 yesterday in a makeup game and will host Southside today in a 5 p.m. start at Bella Vista. Saturday, Post 383 hosts El Dorado in a 10:30 a.m. doubleheader and visits El Dorado High School on Sunday for an 11 a.m. start.
