Fair Oaks Post 383 Wins Again, Record Now 9-2

    The Fair Oaks Post 383 American Legion baseball team continued to dominate its opponents last week, rolling up a 3-1 record with a win over Auburn on June 12, and a doubleheader sweep of El Dorado on June 15.
    Post 383's only loss of the week came Sunday night, dropping an 11-8 decision to El Dorado at the Folsom Sports Complex.
    Fair Oaks jumped out to a quick lead in its game against Auburn, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. Second baseman Trace Coquillette led off the inning with a grounder to third. The throw to first was high, allowing Coquillette to reach safely. Catcher Scott Howard then hit a ball past Auburn's second baseman who took a stab at catching it, but missed it. Howard was able to make it all the way to second with Coquillette landing at third.

    With one out, third baseman Mat Erwin drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Right fielder Chris Kurtz then flew deep to left field. Coquillette tagged and scored to make it a 1-0 game.
    Center fielder Brion Casper followed with a walk, once again loading the bases, and a walk to first baseman Chris Borcich forced in Howard from third to make it a 2-0 game.
    Auburn came back to load the bases in the top of the second inning off Fair Oaks starter Mark Haley, eventually scoring a single run on a hit to right field that drove in left fielder Tim Compton from third base. Haley got out of the inning, however, with Post 383 still in the lead by a score of 2-1.
    In the bottom of the second, Fair Oaks scored two more runs to up its lead to 4-1. Haley led off with a hit to left field and moved to second as Coquillette attempted a bunt. The pitcher fielded the ball and threw to first, but the throw got away allowing Coquillette to reach safely. Haley took third on the play with Coquillette advancing to third.
    Howard then hit a fly ball to left field that allowed Haley to tag and score making it a 3-1 game. Coquillette moved to third on a groundout by shortstop Brent Massoth and scored on a passed ball with Erwin at the plate to make it a 4-1 game.
    Auburn scored a single run in the top of the third, but Fair Oaks came back in the bottom of the inning with two more runs for a 6-2 lead.
    With one out, Casper got a hit to center field. Borcich followed with a hit to left that moved Casper to third, with Borcich taking second as the throw went to third trying to get Casper. Both runners scored on a hit to center field by left fielder Matt Borcich, making it a 6-2 game.
    In the top of the fourth, Auburn scored twice to close the gap to 6-4, but Fair Oaks again extended its lead in the bottom of the inning with a single run. With two outs, Erwin hit a shot over the right field fence for a home run to make it a 7-4 game.
    Post 383 scored another single run in the fifth inning as Casper led off with a triple to center field. Casper scored on a Chris Borcich hit to left to make it an 8-4 contest.
    June 15, Fair Oaks swept a doubleheader from El Dorado at Bella Vista High School, winning the first game 8-3 and taking the second game 6-3. The two wins upped Post 383's record to 9-1 on the year.
    Sunday, Fair Oaks lost to El Dorado 11-8, giving up seven unearned runs in the game.
    Fair Oaks faces Elk Grove in a 5 p.m. game today at Bella Vista. Saturday, Post 383 travels to Rio Linda High School for an 11 a.m. doubleheader against Haggin-Grant. Sunday, Post 383 will host Haggin-Grant in a single game at Bella Vista, also scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
